Innovative Technology of the Week: Urban Intelligence Assist from Audi
A car that shows you where parking spaces are available would be awesome, but a car with the ability to also predict where parking spots will open up would be even more awesome.
Although it is still in the testing phases, “Audi’s Urban Intelligent Assist research initiative uses big data, wireless connectivity and the car’s on-board navigation system to, among other things, tell you which street spaces are available and, even better, when a space will open up.”
“How does it know? Parking spaces along 600 city blocks in San Francisco and nearly 700 in Los Angeles and Hollywood have sensors that connect to a central server. A car leaves the spot, the system marks it as open. If a car takes the spot, it’s marked as occupied… Cooler still, the system can tell you when a spot might open up. Based on historical data and nearby events, it can predict how many spaces near your destination will be available when you arrive. Audi claims the system is 97 percent accurate if you’re 10 minutes away and 91 percent accurate if you’re 20 minutes away.”
Even though this technology might only be available in select locations, the car’s ability to learn patterns and predict future parking spots is incredibly innovative. What if every city had a mobile app that included this technology?
